Corporate Tax Registration & Return Filing in the UAE
Corporate tax, handled — including the reliefs most businesses miss.
Every UAE business must register for corporate tax and file a return within nine months of its financial year end. Relief programmes can reduce the liability substantially — but only if your records support the claim and the return is filed properly.
Scope
What we handle
- Corporate tax registration (and late-registration penalty resolution)
- Annual CT return preparation and filing
- Relief eligibility assessment and elections
- Taxable income computation — what's deductible, what's not, done right
- Transfer pricing basics for businesses dealing with related parties
- Books maintained to CT standard all year, so the return is a formality, not a crisis
Straight talk
Corporate tax is where poor bookkeeping becomes expensive. A return built on messy books invites FTA questions; a return built on our books is a printout. That's why our CT clients are almost always our bookkeeping clients — one retainer, no gaps, no blame between two firms.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who must register? | Every company — mainland and free zone — and any individual whose business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year. |
| What is the rate? | 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it. Qualifying Free Zone Persons pay 0% on qualifying income. |
| When is the return due? | Within nine months of the end of the tax period, together with the payment. A 31 December 2025 year end means 30 September 2026. |
| Is there an extension? | There is no general extension. Penalties start the day after the deadline. |
| No profit, or no activity? | A return is still required. A dormant company with a licence still files. |
The relief most businesses miss
Small Business Relief — now available to the end of 2029
A resident business with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect to be treated as having no taxable income for the period. In August 2026 the Ministry of Finance extended the relief to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029.
- The test is revenue, not profit — and it must be met in the current period and every earlier period
- Cross AED 3 million once and the relief is gone for that period and every later one
- It is an election made in the return — it does not apply automatically
- Not available to Qualifying Free Zone Persons or members of large multinational groups
- Tax losses and disallowed interest from a relief period cannot be carried forward
- You still register, still file, and still keep records
The election is not always the right answer — a business with real losses may be better off filing normally and carrying them forward. We model both before the return is submitted. Read the full guide to Small Business Relief.
Free zones and groups
Free zone companies, related parties and transfer pricing
Free zone companies
The 0% rate is not automatic. A Qualifying Free Zone Person must have adequate substance in the zone, earn qualifying income, stay within the de minimis limit for other income, prepare audited financial statements and comply with transfer pricing. Fail one test and the 9% rate applies — for that year and the four that follow.
Related parties and owners
Transactions with related parties and payments to owners and directors must be at arm's length. Above the disclosure thresholds they are reported in a schedule to the return, and the FTA may ask for the pricing support.
Transfer pricing for SMEs
Most owner-managed groups do not need a master file, but they do need a short, defensible note on how inter-company charges, management fees, loans and rent are priced. We prepare it once and update it each year.
Penalties
Corporate tax penalties at a glance
| Violation | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Late registration | AED 10,000. Waived under the FTA initiative only where the first return was filed within seven months of the first period end. |
| Late filing of the return | AED 500 for each month or part-month for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000 per month. |
| Late payment | 14% per year on the unpaid tax, calculated monthly from the day after the due date. |
| Records not kept, or not provided when asked | A fixed penalty that doubles on repetition within 24 months. |
| Incorrect return | A fixed penalty plus a percentage of the tax difference — lower when you disclose the error yourself. |
How we work
From trade licence to filed return
Confirm your position
Registration status, tax period, deadline, group and free-zone status — from your licence and EmaraTax account.
Make the books return-ready
Reconciled ledgers, related-party balances agreed, fixed assets and accruals supported. If the books are behind we run a catch-up first.
Compute taxable income
Accounting profit adjusted for non-deductible items, entertainment, interest limits, exempt income and transitional rules. Reliefs modelled both ways.
File, pay and document
Return submitted on EmaraTax, payment reference issued, and a working-paper file kept for seven years in case the FTA asks.
