Registration
VAT registration in the UAE — who must register, and when
Registration is decided by your taxable supplies and imports over a rolling twelve months, not by your trade licence or your profit.
| Situation | What the rules require |
|---|---|
| Taxable supplies and imports above AED 375,000 in the last 12 months — or expected in the next 30 days | Mandatory registration. Apply within 30 days of crossing the threshold. |
| Supplies or taxable expenses above AED 187,500 | Voluntary registration is available — useful for start-ups with heavy set-up costs that want to recover input VAT. |
| Registered late | A fixed AED 10,000 penalty, plus the VAT you should have charged from the date you crossed the threshold. |
| Related companies under common control | A VAT tax group may be possible, so supplies between group members fall outside VAT. |
We test your turnover month by month, prepare the EmaraTax application with the supporting documents the FTA asks for, and respond to any queries until the TRN is issued.
Filing
VAT return filing — dates, and what late really costs
Most businesses file quarterly; the largest file monthly. The return and the payment are due by the 28th day after the tax period ends, and a nil return is still a return.
| Event | Penalty under the schedule in force since 14 April 2026 |
|---|---|
| Return filed late | AED 1,000 the first time; AED 2,000 for each repeat within 24 months. |
| VAT paid late | 14% per year on the unpaid tax, calculated monthly — it replaced the old 2% + 4% compounding structure. |
| Error you correct yourself by voluntary disclosure | A monthly percentage of the tax difference, counted from the original due date — far lower than the audit rate. |
| Error the FTA finds in an audit | A fixed percentage penalty on the unpaid tax, in addition to late-payment charges. |
Each return we prepare is built from reconciled books — output VAT by emirate, input VAT checked invoice by invoice, reverse-charge imports, and adjustments for bad debts or credit notes — then reviewed by a second person before it is submitted.
When a past return is wrong
VAT voluntary disclosure
If a filed return understated the tax by more than AED 10,000, the law requires a voluntary disclosure within 20 business days of discovering the error. Smaller errors can normally be corrected in the next return.
- We quantify the error period by period, so the disclosure is complete the first time
- We prepare the explanation letter and supporting schedules the FTA expects to see
- We calculate the penalty exposure before you submit — no surprises afterwards
- Where several periods are affected, we sequence the disclosures to keep the cost down
When the FTA has fined you
FTA penalty reconsideration requests
A penalty is not always the end of the matter. You may ask the FTA to reconsider a decision within 40 business days of being notified, and a well-documented request is judged very differently from an emotional one.
Read the decision
We establish exactly which penalty was applied, to which period, and whether it was calculated correctly.
Build the case
Grounds, timeline and evidence in Arabic, as the FTA requires — system errors, payment proofs, correspondence, medical or force-majeure documents.
Submit and follow up
Filed through EmaraTax, tracked until the FTA issues its reasoned decision.
Next step if refused
An objection to the Tax Disputes Resolution Committee, or a waiver or instalment request where there is an accepted excuse.
Also handled
Input VAT recovery, deregistration and designated zones
Input VAT recovery review
Many businesses under-claim: imports under reverse charge, staff-related costs, mixed-use expenses and invoices addressed to the wrong entity. We review twelve months of purchases and recover what is legitimately yours.
VAT deregistration
If you stop making taxable supplies or fall below the voluntary threshold, you must apply to deregister within 20 business days. A late application carries its own penalty, so closing a business includes closing its TRN.
Designated zones and exports
Goods moving between designated zones, the mainland and overseas follow special rules. We map your flows once and document the treatment so every return is consistent.
